Northern California businesses likely will benefit from a $268,000 grant received by Sierra College's Center for Applied Competitive Technologies.

The center, started in 1997, provides employee training and industry development with mobile laboratories that travel to work sites.

Employees can learn skills such as soldering and installation of high-performance cable systems.

With the funding, the center also will offer technology demonstrations at high school campuses.

The grant was awarded by the California Community Colleges Economic and Workforce Development Programs in a competitive application process. The money will come in 18 installments beginning in January.
