Sierra College Center for Competitive Technologies
trains employees in Lean Manufacturing
ROCKLIN - To stay competitive and profitable, Northern
California manufacturers and technology companies are rethinking
the way they do business. They are looking for ways to
apply the latest manufacturing techniques, train employees
to maximize their potential and analyze production to increase
quality and efficiency. The Sierra College Center for Applied
Competitive Technologies (CACT) is helping businesses,
from Sacramento to the Oregon border, with customized training
and process improvement services. Teledyne Microwave Electronic Components in Rancho Cordova
increased production capacity equivalent to adding 19 employees
as a result of the CACT's guidance in implementing "Five
S," a Lean Manufacturing method to eliminate waste. Carpenter Advanced Ceramics in Auburn engaged the Sierra
College CACT to customize business, computer and management
training for over 30 employees. As a result of working with CACT, Oroville-based Roplast
reduced set up times by an average of 44% after learning
how to apply Lean Manufacturing principles. Businesses can learn more about Lean Manufacturing and
other process improvement methods by attending workshops,
visiting manufacturing demonstration sites and requesting
an on-site assessment. In addition, the CACT offers consulting
services and customized employee training. To assist employers in implementing process improvements,
the CACT facilitates businesses through all aspects of
Lean Manufacturing including Set-up Reduction, Supply Chain
Management, Value Stream Mapping, Total Productive Maintenance.
Visual Controls (Five S) and Change Management. In addition,
individuals and teams benefit from skills training, customized
to the industry and offered at convenient times at the
worksite. Tailored to the company's needs and using relevant
examples, the CACT offers training in: Business Management,
Communication, Project management, Computer Skills, Leadership,
Customer Service, Business Math and Writing and other business
skills. In addition, the CACT supports businesses with a wide
variety of other courses such as cyber security, soldering,
problem solving, blue printing reading, fork lift operating,
English as a second language and handling hazardous materials. The overall goal of the CACT program is economic growth
in the region by helping manufacturing and technology companies
become more profitable and training employees become more
productive. The Sierra College CACT is one of 15 centers state-wide
and serves the Northern California region, not including
the San Francisco Bay Area. The CACT works in concert with
all of the community colleges in the region to ensure that
local services are available to meet employers' needs.
The program also works with the Small Business Development
Centers (SBDC) to provide manufacturing and small business
consulting services. Funding for the CACT comes from the
California Community College 's Economic and Workforce
Development Division. For more information, visit our website
